The first-ever City of Rockford Poet Laureate will be named at this live virtual event.

Join your community in experiencing the inaugural City of Rockford poet Laureate naming ceremony.  Mayor Thomas McNamara will name Rockford's first-ever official Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate.

A City Poet Laureate is an honorary position. Poets Laureate promote literacy and literature among residents of all ages. The Arts Council and the Rockford Public Library will be developing programming and complimentary resources to provide the recipient with opportunities to promote their personal work, host workshops for residents, and appear at important City events.

The official honor of Poet Laureate is awarded for a period of two years and is a grant-funded position. The Youth Poet Laureate is awarded for a period of two years.

About the library

Welcome to Rockford’s newest cultural, arts and community resource. Located at 118 N. Main St., Rockford, the 30,000-square-foot facility provides a multi-use performance and classroom venue for the region’s performing arts, community events, and technology training needs. The entire building is equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi access. Inside you’ll find the 280-seat J.R. Sullivan Theater, multiple meeting and classrooms and the state-of-the-art Walmart Computer Classroom.
