Allende (House of the Spirits, etc.) grew up hearing her grandfather talk about fleeing the Spanish Civil War in 1939 on the SS Winnipeg, outfitted for Chile by poet Pablo Neruda, who called Chile "the long petal of sea and wine and snow." These true stories, and research, inspired Allende to create a multi-decade novel of love, displacement, war, and survival - centering around Victor and Roser Dalmau, idealistic and penniless refugees who marry so they can board the ship. The audio is read by gifted narrator Edoardo Ballerini.
