Let’s talk about the representation of black characters in sci-fi and fantasy. We will read N.K. Jemisin’s essay “How Long ‘Til Black Future Month,” and share some favorite Afrofuturism.
We will be reading part of an essay by N.K. Jemisin called, "How Long 'Til Black Future Month?" We will then discuss the terms "Afrofuturism" and "Africanfuturism" before looking at several books and movies within the genres, including graphic novels. Some of the authors discussed will include Nnedi Okorofor, Tomi Adeyemi, Nalo Hopkinson, and, of course, N.K. Jemisin, the only author in history to win a HUGO award three years in a row.
