A Banned Books Week kick-off event that features a guided tour through the thought-provoking exhibit "Banned Books: The Pederson Collection.
Join us for the inaugural event in our new 'Exhibit Explorations at Lunch' series "Silenced Stories: The Hidden Costs of Book Banning." The event kicks off Banned Books Week and features a guided tour through the thought-provoking exhibit, "Banned Books: The Pederson Collection." Local book seller Dave Pedersen of Maze Books will lead attendees through his curated collection of vintage books that have faced historical bans or challenges. This event is free and open to the public.
During the lunchtime exploration, Pedersen will discuss the dangers of banning literature in our society, offering insights into the historical context and contemporary relevance of literary while considering the impact of censorship on our culture and freedom of expression.
The Banned Books: Pederson Collection exhibit will be on display from September 23-27, providing a week-long opportunity for the community to explore this important topic.
Additionally, Lorene Kennard, RPL Adult Services Manager will be present to answer questions about the Library's collection and policies regarding book challenges, offering a comprehensive look at how public libraries navigate these complex issues.

The 66,000 sq.ft. Main Library opened in spring of 2024 and serves as the Rockford Public Library's main downtown facility. The newly constructed space boasts a 1st floor Children's Area complete with a dedicated computer lab, three program rooms, play structure with slide, and baby garden, a Maker Lab with access to 3D printers and scanners and small board computers, podcasting room, green screen video room, a large Young Adult Zone with gaming center, adult computer lab, local history room, and several meeting and study rooms accommodating groups of 2-8 people. Additional features include a large interactive screen, two roof-top terraces, one of which is available for rent as part of our large event space on the third floor, underground parking, and drive-thru book drop holds pickup!
